Eileen Brown and her fiance Russ Persinger of Derby have endured hardships in their lives. Now, as the owners of Brown Enterprises which includes several online shops, they have found a way to give back to the community by donating prizes to be given away in the Heartland SHARE Winter Wonderland Contest.
Derby Heartland SHARE offers anyone who has volunteered at least two hours during the month the opportunity to purchase grocery items for about half the cost of a supermarket. The Winter Wonderland Contest has been going on since June.
“If you’re a Heartland SHARE person, which means you volunteer in the community during the month, you can buy a share of food,” Brown said. “For anyone who buys the special meat package, their names go into the drawing.”
On Nov. 20, names will be drawn for three prizes that Brown Enterprises donated. First prize is a fabric snowman family, the father stands 32 inches tall; second prize is a 24-inch-tall fabric Christmas snowman; and third prize is a 24-inch-tall fabric Rudolph.
Brown also serves as the secretary for the Derby Heartland SHARE, and designed and maintains it's Web pages. By donating prizes and time, Brown has found a way to give back to those who participate in Heartland SHARE and realize the importance of giving back to others as volunteers.
"Heartland SHARE does a lot for me." she said.
Brown and Persinger started working full time with their online businesses out of necessity. The two met in 1994 and became engaged in 1997. Later that year, Persinger, a former Marine and Vietnam vet, had a brain aneurysm that burst and left him severely handicapped.
"Our online businesses were started with one goal in mind: to pay rising medical bills and most importantly to keep Russ as comfortable as possible," Brown said on her website. "Our businesses can be maintained from home and that is where we do our work."
The donation for the Winter Wonderland Contest comes from www.EileensEshop.com, which has home decor and collectibles. Other Web sites include www.RewardYourKid.com, Web pages for kids to display their good deeds; www.LittleCabinSigns.com, a site that sells crafts; and they also offer fundraising and other opportunities.
